DOA SEORANG IBU

I still remember the first time when I left my daughter (my only child then) when I went to a Retreat for 3 days and 2 nights somewhere in Silang Cavite in 1997...I don't know how could I ever get to my sleep without her by my side...She was only 3 years old at that time. I'm so lonely and quite worried that she may cry and look for me when I'm gone.


When I left her in 1998 to look for work overseas, I couldn't imagine how will I carry the loneliness now that we're miles and miles away from each other. I'm really so sad when I left her that day.


As a mother, I always keep my young children on my sight. I never ever let them go alone or walk alone without my hands holding them especially if we're in crowded and public places.
Maybe, they'll say that I'm quite over protected with my children but for me, I just love my children the way I love my own body...They are part of my body and of my heart and if they're far from me,it seems part of my limbs are missing too...


When I reached the foreign land, I'm so happy 'cause I'm already with my husband who went there ahead of me. But I'm also so sad because of the absence of our 4 year old daughter.
I always cry whenever I think of her, especially during the night before I went to sleep. I always remember those days when we're still together. Each night, before we close our eyes and after we prayed, we're going to kiss each other on the forehead, down to the nose, cheeks, lips, ears and chin and then we're going to hug each other so tight and will say I love you...


Her daddy is away since she was 2 years old but I always tell some stories about her father so that she's not going to forget about him. I always let her kiss her dad's picture and ask her to bid goodnite as well. They're so close with each other too when my husband was still with us in the Philippines, that's why I don't want it to fade away 'though he is far from us.


Sometimes, even during meals, I'll cry so suddenly if my daughter will run through my mind. It's hard for me to swallow my food 'cause my heart is really in pain.
I really wish and pray that my family could be whole and together again someday...but because of our situation as a migrant worker who just started a new life in foreign land, it is quite difficult to bring our small daughter with us here during that time.



My husband couldn't afford to see me crying all the time. He wanted us to be together as well, if not for permanent, atleast just for temporary is also fine.
So in 1999, we brought our daughter here for a visit..it was a school vacation. She stayed with us from end of March until early June, I'm really so happy again when I saw my daughter when she arrived from Philippines.



My husband fetched her at the airport, she was with my brother in-law. I am at work when she came to see me, she was very happy too. We kissed and hugged immediately upon seeing eachother, we really missed eachother during that time.
The loneliness comes back when it is time for her to go back home but to ease the pain of being away from our daughter, we just let her come here on every vacation. It was every year until the year of 2001 came. We tried to apply for a dependant visa for her so that she can come with us all the time and got an education too while we're working here...





But it was unsuccessful, the salary required is not sufficient so it was denied...when I read the letter upon receiving it from the immigration, I really cried infront of the officer. My heart really broke and it was really a terrible painful moment for me as a mother. We just want to bring our child but the policy is so strict.



In 2002, I delivered to my second child here in abroad. We got a boy at this time and because he was born here, there's no problem for us if we want him to stay with us. They can give him a dependant visa as long that my employer is going to support us...



In that year, my husband's contract was renewed so his salary was upgraded too and when we applied for dependant visa for our son, it was immediately approved. I'm so happy that my son can stay with us while we're working here but still, the family is not complete because my daughter can only come here for a short visit visa as she wasn't given the dependant's visa.


But when she came here in 2004, we tried to apply a dependant visa again for her because our salary and contract has been renewed and upgraded so we might got a chance that we'll be approved this time...And yes, through constant prayers, our wish was granted...We finally took our daughter with us here too and we're now a happy family.



As an OFW mother, I'm really thankful that GOD gave me a chance to be with my children while working overseas. I know that there are plenty of mothers who couldn't have a chance to bring their children with them while working as an OFW, that's why I feel so great that I'm among the lucky one.



I think that GOD is really granting my prayers and wishes. When I was young, 'though a poor child, I never ever think of becoming rich, I just longed for a simple and a happy family of my own. That's my only and true happiness even before, now although it's quite expensive and we couldn't save much at the bank while my children are both studying overseas, it is just fine for us as long that we're all happy together...!!!

RENUNGAN: APA YANG KAMU PERBINCANGKAN

Setelah Yesus bersama muridnya menikmati keindahan panorama di atas bukit. Kesejukan udara dan keindahan alam di atas bukit menggoda hati para murid untuk tinggal dan mendirikan kemah di atas bukit, kaki mereka enggan untuk melangkah. Lalu Yesus mengajak para muridnya untuk turun ke tempat yang lebih rendah, turun ke dataran. Turunlah mereka dari bukit melewati lembah yang berkelok-kelok. Setibanya mereka tiba di dataran. Orang banyak menanti mereka.


Di dataran inilah, yesus menyembuhkan banyak orang dan di dataran ini pula para murid tidak berhasil meyembuhkan orang sakit. Suara protes terdengar dari orang banyak, kenapa para muridnya tidak mampu menyembuhkan orang sakit. Pengalaman kegembiraan di atas bukit masih terukir indah dan kini pengalaman kegagalan di dataran membuat para murid kecewa dan tak bersemangat lagi.


Di tengah situasi patah semangat, tiba-tiba Yesus mengajak para muridnya untuk pergi ke Galilea. Karena guru yang mengajak maka berangkatlah mereka ke Galilea. Di tengah jalan Yesus mengatakan kepada muridnya banhwa anak manusia tidak akan lama lagi diserahkan ke tangan manusia, dibunuh lalu mati tetapi pada hari ketiga hidup lagi. Para murid merasa bingung apa maksud kata Yesus ini. Lupakan persoalan ini, para muridnya justru berpikir siapa yang terbesar di antara mereka kalau Yesus tidak ada di tengah-tengah mereka.

Siapakah yang terbesar?

Setiap mereka memiliki peluang yang sama, status yang sama yaitu murid Yesus. Memiliki peluang yang sama tergoda melihat diri dan mengidealkan sendiri. Siapakah yang terbesar ? Merupakan topik menarik bagi mereka. Konsentrasi, perhatian, hati mereka sudah menjauh dari Yesus, Yesus bukan lagi pilihan mereka untuk didengar, menjauah dari Yesus lebih baik daripada takut kehilangan kesempatan untuk menjadi yang terbesar.


Semakin hangat perbincangan di antara mereka siapa yang terbesar, semakin besar peluang hati mereka tersingkir dan terpinggir dari hati seorang guru. Yesus memilih diam, ditengah perbicangan para muridnya. Perbincangan mereka belum berhenti, tiba-tiba Galilea ada di depan mata mereka.


Yesus mengajak para muridnya untuk masuk di Kapernaum. Yesus ingin para muridnya untuk membeningkan pikiran dan hati mereka, Yesus mengajak para muridnya untuk melihat dan menikmati cahaya kapernaum, cahaya yang membeningkan, cahaya yang memberi kekuatan tatkala kegelapan, kesulitan, kebingungan, kesibukan hidup dan perkara hidup. Kapernaum adalah tempat nostalgia bagi Yesus, sewaktu kecil, Yesus selalu berada di kapernaum dan sekian sering orangtuanya bingung, ke mana mereka harus mencari Yesus.


Dan yesus mengatakan tidak tahukah kamu aku ada di rumah bapaku. Rumah bapa adalah kapernaum, dan Yesus adalah kapernaum baru, cahaya baru, dan kekuatan baru. Kini Yesus menginginkan para muridnya untuk mencintai kapernaum, mencintai yesus sebagai kapernaum baru, sebagai rumah bapa yang hidup, mencintai yesus lebih dari segala sesuatu.


Dalam kapernaum, yesus bertanya kepada muridnya, apa yang kamu perbincangkan di tengah jalan tadi. Siapakah yang terbesar? Para muridnya diam. Lalu Yesus menggendong seorang anak kecil dan berbicara, barang siapa menerima “anak kecil ini”, ia menerima aku dan menerima bapa. Kali ini Yesus berbicara lewat kehadiran anak kecil.


Dalam kisah yang lain, ketika Yesus memperbanyak roti, untuk lima ribu orang, anak kecil tampil sebagai penyelamat, di saat para murid bingung ketiadaan bekal. Masih kita ingat, ketika para murid ingin tinggal di bukit yang tinggi Yesus mengajak para muridnya untuk turun ke tempat yang rendah, tempat rendah merupakan ruang gerak anak kecil, masih kita ingat ketika yesus membasuh kaki para muridnya, ia mulai dari kaki, kaki merupakan wilayah yang mudah kotor, juga wilayah anak kecil.


Siapakah yang terbesar? Sebelum yesus menjelaskan siapakah yang terbesar, yesus mengajar lebih dulu para muridnya, siapa yang terkecil. Yesus tahu bahwa para muridnya tidak ingin menjadi yang terkecil, terendah dan terkotor.


Yesus adalah yang terkecil dan terendah serta terkotor. Ia dilahirkan di Nasaret tempat yang kecil, tempat yang kotor, tempat rendah. Yesus memilih tempat yang kecil, kotor dan rendah untuk mengangkat manusia menjadi anak Allah yang tinggi dan besar. Yesus memilih menjadi yang terkecil, terendah supaya manusia bisa mendekati Allah yang tinggi.


Yesus memilih turun ke tempat rendah supaya dapat melayani kebutuhan dan kerinduan manusia akan keselamatan. Yesus memilih tinggal di tempat yang kotor supaya manusia menjadi anak Allah yang bersih, Yesus memilih menjadi anak kecil supaya manusia belajar memilki hati bersih seperti anak-anak, belajar bergantung pada Tuhan seperti anak menggantungkan segala sesuatu kepada ibunya.

Apakah yang kamu perbincangkan?

Yesus kembali betanya kepada anda, apa yang kamu perbincangkan? Pertanyaan ini seakan-akan mengejar anda takkala anda sekarang ada di depan komputer, sedang sakit, lagi senang, sedih, mungkin sedang mengadakan perjalanan, ditengah keramaian, di gereja, atau lagi masak, boleh jadi lagi baring di tempat tidur, atau bahkan lagi ruang penjara menanti hari-hari kematian. Yesus tetap mengajukan pertanyaan yang sama, apa yang kamu perbincangkan?

Yesus ingin menjadi bagian dari apa yang anda rasakan sekarang. Yesus ingin mengalir dalam peristiwa hidup anda sekecil apa pun masalah anda. Yesus memilih tempat yang rendah supaya anda mudah mendekati dan mengertinya. Yesus ingin menjadi kapernaum bagi anda, rumah yang bercahaya tatkala anda merasa asing dengan situasi anda bahkan merasa benci karena kegagalan dan problema hidup anda.

Yesus menjadi anak kecil yang tulus dan setia kepada anda takkala anda dikecewakan oleh sahabat atau orang dekat anda. Yesus menjadikan anda, orang yang paling istimewah di hatinya takkala anda merasa dihina dan disingkirkan oleh orang-orang sekitar anda.Yesus mendekati anda takkala orang semakin jauh. Yesus ingin manjadi jawaban atas cita-cita dan mimpi anda.
Aneka peristiwa hidup kita adalah peristiwa yang serupa dengan apa yang dialami oleh para murid di tengah jalan. Banyak persoalan dan masalah sedang kita pikul, yang kadang membuat anda menjauh dari yesus. Ada banyak kegembiraan dan pesta hidup yang kadang membuat anda lupa yesus. Tapi yesus tidak pernah berubah sekalipun dalam situasi apapun yang anda sedang alami.


Yesus hanya bertanya, apa yang sedang kamu perbincangkan, apa yang kamu alami, apa yang kamu pikirkan? Apa masalah anda? Yesus mengajak anda seperti Yesus mengajak para muridnya untuk melihat cahaya kapernaum, memasuki kapernaum untuk membeningkan pikiran dan hati anda. Pengalaman melihat cahaya kapernaum akan membawa anda mengalami penglaman kedekatan yesus. Kedekatan untuk mendengar yesus dan menjadi cahaya kapernaum bagi yang lain.


Pengalaman kedekatan dengan Yesus tidak cukup melihat cahaya kapernaum, tapi yesus masih menuntut anda untuk mencintai anak kecil, mencintai tempat rendah, tempat kotor sebab dari sanalah akan mengerti perkara besar, mengerti siapa yang terbesar dan siapa yang bersih. Setelah anda mengalami pengalaman melihat dan menikmati cahaya kapernaum, dan tugas anda adalah diminta untuk menjadi cahaya kapernaum bagi orang lain, cahaya yang menuntun orang untuk mengalami pengalaman yang sama, pengalaman kedekatan dengan yesus.


Setelah anda mengalami pengalaman kebesaran menjadi yang terkecil, terendah dan terkotor, yesus meminta anda menjadi anak kecil, menjadi figure pesan bahasa dan kata hidup Allah bagi sesama. Menjadi anak kecil yang mengekpresikan secara sempurna pengalaman kelembutan dan kesempurnaan cinta Allah kepada sesama. Semoga !

Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.”

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!
Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California!But not only that;

From every mountainside, let freedom ring. Why I Live in the Philippines

1. Every street has a basketball
court.

2. Even doctors, lawyers and engineers
are unemployed.

3. Doctors study to become nurses for
employment abroad.

4. Students pay more money than they
will earn afterwards.

5. School is considered the second
home and the mall considered the
third.

6. Call-center employees earn more
money than teachers and nurses.

7. Everyone has his personal ghost
story and superstition.

8. Mountains like Makiling and Banahaw
are considered holy places.

9. Everything can be forged.

10. All kinds of animals are edible.

11. Starbucks coffee is more expensive
than gas.

12. Driving 4 kms can take as much as
four hours.

13. Flyovers bring you from the
freeway to the side streets.

14. Crossing the street involves
running for your dear life.

15. The personal computer is mainly
used for games and Friendster.

16. Where colonial mentality is
dishonestly denied!

17. Where 4 a.m. is not even
considered bedtime yet.

18. People can pay to defy the law.

19. Everything and everyone is
spoofed.

20. Where even the poverty-stricken
get to wear Ralph Lauren and Tommy
Hilfiger (peke)!

21. The honking of car horns is a way
of life.

22. Being called a bum is never
offensive.

23. Floodwaters take up more than 90
percent of the streets during the
rainy season.

24. Where everyone has a relative
abroad who keeps them alive.

25. Where wearing your national colors
make you baduy.

26. Where even the poverty-stricken
have the latest cell phones. (GSM-
galing sa magnanakaw)

27. Where insurance does not work.

28. Where water can only be classified
as tap and dirty.

29. Clean water is for sale (35 pesos
per gallon).

30. Where the government makes the
people pray for miracles. (Amen to
that!)
